Part of Martin Cooney’s Cosmic Twins duo, Salt of the Earth is the “brother” to Girl in the Moon, together forming a striking pair of hand-carved marble masks. The piece was born from a single rectangular block of Colorado Yule Marble, cleanly split on the diagonal—a perfect division that gave rise to two perfectly matched canvases.

Inspired by African mask forms and touched by the influence of Picasso, Salt of the Earth represents the protective, grounded twin. Its finely carved contours and wafer-thin profile are a testament to both the quality of the stone and the artist’s precision. When illuminated from behind, the eyes emit a soft, mysterious glow—making this sculpture a compelling presence in dim or intimate settings.

Symbolic, luminous, and sculpturally balanced, Salt of the Earth is both a standalone work and part of a greater whole—a twin spirit in stone.
