Sheer Strength celebrates the rare translucence that sets Colorado Yule Marble apart from all other carving stones. Under strong light, the piece reveals a hidden world of soft veining, drifting hues, and subtle inner luminosity—a reminder that this very same marble shaped the Lincoln Memorial, yet rewards close study like a semi-precious stone.
Carved from a section of The Liberty Slab, this sculpture was conceived as one of a pair. Her counterpart, Sheer Folly, will join the Collection soon. The split that separated the two forms was so clean and precise that the natural column-like markings directly inspired the design of the companion piece.
Her stance, fluid lines, and sweeping wing-like shape draw inspiration from the wildlife Martin encounters daily here in the Flint Hills—especially the eagles that soar over the lakes and reservoirs near our studio. Herons, gulls, deer, fish, and the unexpected wildness of this landscape all played their part in her final form.
Sheer Strength performs beautifully in strong light. Sunlight brings her to life, but a single spotlight will do the job after dark. She’s designed to be moved, handled, and appreciated from every angle—this sculpture transforms with each shift in perspective.
