Designed & Handmade with Care in Council Grove, Kansas

about us

In 2023, master sculptor Martin Cooney and his wife Kris relocated from the Colorado high country near Aspen to the heart of the Kansas Flint Hills. After completing the remarkable Walled Garden of Alta Vista, Martin began envisioning a larger-scale project—one that would bring his vision for a premier stone sculpting and fabrication facility to life.

Teaming up with Kelley Judd, the concept for Martin Cooney Stoneworks began to take shape. By chance—or providence—they discovered a former welding shop with the perfect bones for a world-class sculpting studio. In January 2025, Kelley and Jill Judd acquired the building and began the transformation.

Today, the facility houses state-of-the-art carving bays, advanced fabrication tools, and showroom. Designed with both function and beauty in mind, MCS stands as a one-of-a-kind destination for handcrafted stonework in the American Midwest.

ABOUT Martin Cooney

I’m Martin Cooney, a classically trained banker mason and reductionist stone sculptor with over 25 years of hands-on experience. I hold an NVQ Level 2 qualification in Banker Masonry from The City of Bath College in my native England. My work is rooted in traditional technique, yet my approach is uniquely modern—carving Colorado Yule Marble, Kansas Crème Limestone, and Oklahoma Winterset Limestone to the highest standards.

Originally from Preston, I’ve lived and worked in London, Bath, Portland (Oregon), Woody Creek, and Aspen. Today, my wife Kris and I call the Kansas Flint Hills home. From our studio—Martin Cooney Stoneworks, located at 121 Liberty Street in historic Council Grove—I carve both my Collection Series marble sculptures and bespoke Kansas limestone works with precision, passion, and purpose.
