Description
Colorado Yule Marble – The Liberty Collection
Dimensions: 20 x 13.5 x 8 ”
Weight 33.8 lbs
Sleek, sculptural, and remarkably light for its size, Biretta marks a milestone in Martin Cooney’s return to full-scale marble carving. With its flowing curvilinear form and dazzling white finish, this hand-carved bowl embodies the grace and precision of Cooney’s signature Direct Method Reductionist style. Born from a corner of the monumental Liberty Slab, Biretta was sculpted under ideal conditions in the newly completed Martin Cooney Stoneworks studio—a stark contrast to the pioneering Liberty Bowl that came before it. The result is a confident, refined work that balances dramatic overhangs with subtle, self-righting stability.
Named for the traditional four-cornered clerical hat it faintly resembles, Biretta is as functional as it is elegant. Its satin-smooth interior is protected by an invisible Italian sealant, making it perfect for displaying anything from fruit and ice to oysters and champagne. Displayed in a sunny window or under spotlight, the bowl radiates a warm, opaque glow unique to fine Colorado Yule Marble. As with all works in The Liberty Collection, Biretta is signed, serial-numbered, and built to live with—an object of beauty made to be seen, touched, and used.
