Colorado Yule Marble – The Liberty Collection

Although I don’t currently have a dog in my life, I spent more than twenty years caring for two very different companions—a terrier-mixed “Heinz 57” mongrel and a very proper English Spaniel. Like many people, I know the familiar story arc of a dog’s life and the deep friendship that forms between a dog and its owner.
This sculpture captures a particular moment near the end of that long friendship.
Fido is old now—very old. He spends most of his day sleeping and thinks carefully before leaving his comfortable spot. But when he hears familiar footsteps outside the door, something stirs. He knows that sound. It’s almost certainly you.
In an instant, the old dog gathers himself. He sits upright, nose lifted to sniff the air, back straight, eyes fixed on the door. His tail wraps neatly around his leg as he waits, hopeful but cautious. For just a moment, the spirit of the energetic puppy he once was returns.
That moment—the instant before the door opens—is what “Fido’s Still Got It” captures.
The sculpture is designed to sit near a doorway or against a wall. It is carved as a curvilinear relief, meaning the story is meant to be seen from the front and sides, much like a painting with a single viewpoint. The back is intentionally hollowed and rounded, which reduces weight and creates natural handholds for moving the piece. Though the sculpture weighs about 66 pounds, it is sturdy and surprisingly manageable.
Like all works in the Collection Series, the sculpture bears my mark, signature, serial number, and identifying details carved into the underside of the base. Fido’s Still Got It is the 25th sculpture carved from the Liberty block of Colorado Yule Marble, created in The Liberty Building, home of Martin Cooney Stoneworks.
And the name “Fido”? It simply felt right—a name that stands for everyone’s faithful house dog. My own dogs had their names, of course, but this fellow looked to me exactly like what he is: a big, old, friendly Fido.
