A conceptual leap in Martin Cooney’s 1314 Winter Collection, Reversed Equation shifts the sculptural focus from form to void—emphasizing the power of negative space and the light it invites in. With its carved-out sections and convex contours, the piece acts as a dynamic frame, casting shadows and bouncing light in ways that transform its environment.
Though inspired by the soft flicker of a candle, Reversed Equation is anything but fragile. It has been fully weather-tested in the harsh conditions of the Colorado Rockies, withstanding snow, sun, and shifting temperatures with ease. Its rough surface is achieved through a technique called pitching—splitting the marble along natural seams to create thousands of glinting, textured facets.
Set on a secure steel rod, the sculpture swivels effortlessly, allowing viewers to engage with its changing profile and the shifting interplay of shadow and illumination. A part of Cooney’s “Standing Stones” series, Reversed Equation is equal parts sculpture, light catcher, and elemental totem.
