Carved using the direct method, The Mountains of Moab is one of the rare pieces that revealed its final form almost instantly. With a single, well-placed strike of the mallet, Martin Cooney split the marble block—and the silhouette of the sculpture emerged in full, echoing the jagged beauty of Utah’s iconic Moab range.

What began as an instinctive response to the stone evolved into a functional three-sectioned bowl. The deep, sculpted valleys between each peak offer space for candles, shells, water, or seasonal decor—blending art with utility. The untouched mountain ridges preserve the raw drama of the original break, lending the work a sense of unfiltered natural wonder.

At once sculptural and practical, The Mountains of Moab invites the viewer to admire its form and explore its possibilities.
